This course introduces students to the art of black and white film photography. Students will learn foundation photography skills such as: operation of a 35mm camera, exposure, composition, and darkroom printing. We will study the history of film photography and it’s continued use as an expressive medium in contemporary art. You will explore the potential of photography as a tool to document the world, and as an expressive medium to communicate your personal vision.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES  Students in this course will learn how to:

  • Use a 35mm camera to control exposure and depth of field by manipulating aperture, shutter speed and ISO
  • Develop film and print black and white prints in the darkroom – controlling contrast, tone globally and locally
  • Expertly use studio lights and backdrops to photograph people and objects
  • Use natural light as primary light source and use of reflectors to correctly expose lights and shadows
  • Discuss photographs produced by others technically, formally, and conceptually
  • Use composition principles to arrange picture elements effectively
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the history of photography as well as contemporary photography practices
  • Create images that visually communicate ideas and concepts. Use photography to express critical content that comments on social, cultural, or personal aspects of the contemporary world

 

COURSE FORMAT

Classes will include darkroom printing, shooting of photographs, short lectures, technical demos, small and large group discussion, and presentations.

 

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT/ MATERIALS   

  • 35mm camera with full manual control settings. (50mm Lens or similar) **You can borrow one for the term from the Library Audiovisual 
  • Photo Film B/W film –will need: 7 to 10 rolls – rolls of 36 exposures each
  • For the class use film for indoor and outdoor:  Ilford HP5 400, Ilford Delta 400, Kodak Tmax 400

    Other options-ISO 100 used for bright light mainly outdoors:  Kodak Tmax 100ISO(or ASA), Ilford HP4 125.

DO NOT BUY Color film or Ilford XP2B/W – ( they are called C-41 PROCESS FILMS – can’t be processed in the b/w film lab)

  • 1 package multigrade RC (resin coated) B/W paper (100 – 8″X10″ sheets)
  • Negative sleeves – for 35mm & Letter size Binder
  • Anti-static cloth, Rubber blower, Black card paper
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Notebook or binder for handouts and/or sketchbook for general note taking, sketching, planning
  • 1 Foam core – white 16×20”  or 20×24”  to use as reflector (AKA “the dollar store reflector”)
  • 1 32×40 mat board or foam core for drymounting (for later in the term)

Other Equipment – Optional:  Tripod  and  Bright flood lights, Loupe, Scissors , Coloured sharpie pen or grease pencil,  1 Canister of compressed air

 

Borrowing Equipment   Digital Media and Photography students can borrow DSLR cameras, film cameras, light kits, tripods, and other equipment FROM LIBRARY Audiovisual Circulation. 1 day loan cameras – extend online for 2 days loan. (These cameras reserved for Fine Arts Students ONLY – You must let library staff  know you are in Fine Arts to borrow)Extended borrowing period for 35mm cameras from KPU library.

BREAKDOWN OF GRADING (subject to change)

 

Projects (2 projects each 15%, 1 project 20%)
(each project has 40% marks for project progress presented in class, planning, and revision, and 60% marks for final images and statement submitted)

Short assignments, quiz, and darkroom in class exercises 30%
Research Project (Student Presentation) 10%
Participation in studio work

Final grades for each assignmentwill be based on: creativity, technical ability, conceptual development, and effective visual communication. Each project has 40% marks for demonstrated progression and revision of the work over time, 60% marks for final images submitted. All work handed in for grading has to be created specifically for this class. Art that was created at an earlier date, or for another class will not be graded.
Late assignments will not be available for class critique and will affect your final grade. Late assignments may be accepted for grading with deductions (-2 % point per day). Permissions for an extension must be requested prior to the deadline. Students are required to develop and revise projects in consultation with the instructor.
Work outside of class will be necessary to successfully complete all class assignments (location scouting, photo shooting, processing and printing). Long (2 or 3 week projects) are made up of short assignments that MUST be completed with enough time prior to the project deadline to allow for consultation with instructor, discussion with classmates, and revision.


Participation grade in this course will be based on:

  • Willingness to engage with the course content and try ways of working and processes new to you.
  • Participation in the class lectures, demos, and in class exercises. Effective use of class time to complete work, including taking photos and processing film for printing exercises in class ahead of time, having work in progress ready when due for discussion in class, completing assignments by due dates.

ATTENDANCEis mandatory. Absenteeism, lateness, and leaving early will affect your grade. Extreme attendance problems will result in a reduction of grades. Each unexplained absence after one will be counted as -2 points against your participation grade. Each lateness or leaving early will count as -1 point in your participation grade.
It is your responsibility to obtain copies of handouts, or project instructions from the instructor or fellow classmates and keep up with the class work if you miss a class.

 

Class Etiquette During class discussions, presentations or lectures, all students should stop working on assignments, surfing the net, or checking their email, etc. All students will be required to act in a respectful manner during class critiques, presentations and lectures.

Eating is not permitted in the studios. Drinks are permitted but you must take containers with you. Labs are for students in digital media or photo classes only.
